The Artist

Tim R Smith is a photographer based in Miami, Florida.  An avid collector of fine art photography, Tim retired in 2013 from a 29-year corporate career in business research, communications, and public relations to pursue his life-long interest in getting behind the lens—taking pictures and making art.  He therefore combines his interest in photography with an extensive professional background in print and web-based communications, public outreach, and community relations.

With his iPhone at the ready, he initially experimented with mobile photography and built a presence on Instagram (@timsmia).   While mobile photography is still an interest, Tim now employs other digital platforms including DSLR and mirrorless full-frame cameras.  He continues to use some mobile applications to edit his photographs and manipulate digital images.  Tim’s current interest is experimenting with light, color and form.  He is particularly drawn to forms and abstractions found in both the natural and built environment.

No Context:  Abstract Expressions in Architecture

With a visual vocabulary of bold geometry—lines, shapes, and unique patterns—imbued with subtle texture and tones or unexpected color this series captures the complex effect of light on architectural details. Structural elements, fenestration, and ornamentation are reduced to two-dimensional expressions. Devoid of context—people, streets, sky, neighboring buildings—these architectural images become studies in objective abstraction. The photographer’s subjective point of view emerges through nontraditional composition and subtle digital manipulation, often capturing overall patterns rather than defining a single point of interest.
